The villages of Ameland

Learn more about Ameland during your holiday! The island has 4 villages; Nes, Hollum, Ballum and Buren. Three of them (Nes, Hollum and Ballum) have a protected village face! Nes is the charming, lively capital with a historic (car-free) core with beautiful commander's houses, but also nice shops and nice terraces and restaurants. You can still see traces of the past, even in Hollum. In the historic centre, you can see the old commander's houses, former skipper's houses and the oldest house in Ameland. There is also an impressive 55-meter high lighthouse. The lighthouse can be visited and climbed! After 236 steps you have a beautiful panoramic view. Ballum is the smallest village on Ameland, an authentic village with 350 inhabitants. It has beautiful old buildings, including the reformed church and the associated tower. Buren is the youngest village and was the farming village of Ameland in the past. Now it offers the holidaymaker cosy liveliness. In the village you will find the Agricultural and Juttersmuseum Swartwoude. From your flat or holiday home in one of the villages, you have the ideal base for a holiday on Ameland.
