Are you a nature lover? The Terschelling dunes are the largest contiguous nature reserve in the Netherlands. The island also has 400 hectares of forest where you can enjoy the Boschplaat, Koegelwieck, Noordsvaarder and Kroonpolders (near West aan Zee) nature reserves. Great for a visit in the summer, perfect for a holiday on Terschelling in spring or autumn.

Remember you need to take the ferry from Harlingen to reach your holiday home on Terschelling. You could choose to take your car, but we think you should not forget your own bike. Terschelling is perfect to explore by bike. And have you thought about what you'd like to see? We would like to give you a few tips.

For your holiday on Terschelling, take the ferry from Harlingen, which takes about 1 hour 45 minutes. You need to get a boat to West-Terschelling. You can take your bike or car, but remember to book in advance if taking the car with you. There are buses on Terschelling and you can, of course, get a taxi there, too. Did you not bring a bike? You can rent a bike on Terschelling at the Havenplein. 

Are you bringing your dog(s) with you? Dogs are welcome on Terschelling: dogs are allowed off the lead on the beach and in the woods. Elsewhere on the island, your four-legged friend must be on a lead. 

Are you planning on spending quite some time on the beach? Please note, the beach pavilions are open from April to November. Only the pavilion at Branding is open all year round. 

And if you are going exploring on the island, make sure you visit the Boschplaat nature reserve, the largest nature reserve in the Netherlands. Around 70 species of birds breed in this area during the breeding season, and the beach here is very wide and beautiful. If you are lucky, you'll also spot a seal. 

Are you more of a culture vulture? Then visit the Sint Janskerk in Hoorn, dating from 1250: it is the oldest building on the island. You will also come across the oldest lighthouse on the island: Brandaris lighthouse in West-Terschelling is more than 400 years old.
