But the Wadden Sea (about 38 km) is also within easy reach. You can practise many different water sports at the Markermeer (about 14 km) and the IJsselmeer (about 35 km). And if you prefer city trips then you will find no shortage of destinations in this region. How about a visit to historic Alkmaar (about 15 km) with its world-famous Friday morning cheese market? The capital city of Amsterdam (about 53 km) is also very accessible. You can stop off at Zaanse Schans on the way to Amsterdam. This village is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for good reason. There is plenty for the kids to do as well: in Enkhuizen (about 37 km) for example you will find the nice Zuiderzee Museum, where they can learn to write like in 1930, play old Dutch games and make their own skipping rope from plants. The Sprookjeswonderland fairy-tale theme park is also located close by. Landgoed Hoenderdaell animal park is also a great destination for a daytrip. Amidst all the hustle and bustle you will also find tranquil nature areas such as the Schoorlse Dunes and great cycling routes that start at the park and lead through the North Holland countryside.
